Thinking about Jurgen
2014 isn't the year how we expect it would be: Transalp 2013 poisoned Edith her grandfondo future until today. Every day working to retrieve the power and the dream to pick up riding again.
I also had some issues: in April I caught an infection: 10 days in bed and no power to get up. I could start over again regaining my health and cycling condition. I did ride 3 Ballons and La Cannibale du Mont Ventoux, but realized something was wrong again.

Blood test confirmed: the infection had taken over again hypodermic and forced me to stop all my physical activities to avoid worse. If this infection contaminate human most important muscle, the heart, the consequences would be lethal.
After a rest period and relaxing in our beloved mountains the blood results showed this week that I could start over again..at last!

When I saw Jurgen Van Den Broeck riding his bike yesterday in TdF, I was thinking of my feeling during 3 Ballons and La Cannibale: you can force your body for a few days, but in the end your body is in charge.
Again, I realized the importance taking care of your body and how important a human his health is. Everybody realizes this importance at certain moments (illness, health problems friends or family, ...) but past year and period, these thoughts aren't latent anymore. They are always on my mind.

Paris-Roubaix
Together with Team Wilier Triestina, we conquered the cobble stones of Paris-Roubaix.
Nice experience and respect for the pro riders! Trouée d'Ardenberg and Carrefour de l'Arbre are really hard.

Updates
Last weekend, Frederic went to Oliva (Spain) for a short VIP stage with the team Omega-Pharma Quick-Step. A present by Aquarius for a climbing time during Sean Kelly classic this summer.
On Sunday, the team took us on a recovery ride. In the afternoon, we made our own ride. In the meanwhile, the OPQS armada were recovering from the days before. A short, but entertaining trip, in good weather conditions.

Master your strenghts, outsource your weaknesses
One week ago, I participated a final duathlon in Wachtebeke. Just for fun, without specific training last weeks. I didn't run for almost two weeks and trained on my 29'er, with the focus on core stability training inside.
The mountainbike track was quite muddy due to the massive rain. The running track was flooded with water. Not easy to run in the curves on the grass.
Cautiously I took the first curve and tried to catch a good rhythm.
My first 5km (2 x 2,5km) run wasn't good and I started the 30km (3 x 10km) mountainbike in position 23. But I knew I would gain places during the second half of this duathlon. The track was heavy due to the mud. On certain hills, it was too slippery to ride. There we had to use our cyclocross talents and jump off the bike. I catched up a group with Nicolas Vermeulen (former belgian champion MTB marathon) on could hold on for the first two rounds. The last round, I had to leave a gap and struggled with the mud. I finished at place 11 (or 10, like the speaker told the crowd) before heading for the last 5km run.
The shoe-switch went well and I saw two competitors running. They started the last run about 2 minutes before me but I didn't weaken. This situation looked feasible and in the last round of 2,5km I could gain two positions. So I closed the duathlon at place 9....or 8? Who can tell? Probabely, I competitor has only run one lap, or there was a mistake by the broadcaster...Nevertheless I was satisfied with this position. http://www.wtt2000.be/www/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Klassement_Winterduatlon2013_reeks2_ind.pdf
Maybe I had to this about a duathlon career? With a specifiek focus on the running part, I would master this part more than ever? Pictures will follow as soon as they're available on the website: http://www.wtt2000.be/

Other influences
Last weekend, was quite busy: Saturday 19th of October I participated the MTB duathlon in Lembeke (3,2km run - 20km bike - 1,6km run) and on Sunday the Omega Pharma Davitamon 10km run.
The past two weeks were rather inactive because of an injury on my foot due to a lack of training in preparation for the duathlon in Wetteren on September 29th. No great expectations I had!
I just wanted to look and see how everything was going. A real sprint duathlon is more intensive and hard to get the right rhythm. I have to train more precise to obtain a better result in future sprint duathlon.
Afterall I was not that dissatisfied and got up to a 20th place overall and a 9th time overall in the bike part.

Sunday I was present in Nazareth for the second time to run the Davitamon 10km. Last year, with more running preparation, I finished after 40min44sec and became 45th overall.
A similar result would be nice, also knowing I had a rough day before. I didn't start too fast, to avoid a breakdown at the end, like last year during the final kilometer. I ran a smart race, taking into account the crosswind and finished after 38min53sec and a 31th place on 667 participants. Almost two minutes faster. Didn't expect that at all! It's also nice to look at the finish video when clicking the participant's name.
